Small Business Spotlight // Bakery Charms

Bakery Charms offers the most realistically cute and adorably inedible dessert jewelry and accessories for anyone who could use a little fun and happiness in their daily life. It is a one-woman show run by Jenn K. Lee, who hand makes all of the wearable treats out of polymer clay in her home-based studio in Hawaii. In addition to current jewelry designer and former blog owner/editor, she is mommy to two little girls (a 5-year-old who wants her own charm line when she grows up and an almost-2-year-old who always wants to know “what making?”) and best friend to her husband of 9 years.

Jenn has had a lifelong interest in miniature foods, especially desserts, but actually only learned last year 1) that it was possible to make them out of polymer clay (thanks to research she was doing for a blog) and 2) that she actually had a knack for making them herself (thanks to a gift of some clay and tools from her kids). She started working with clay in January 2014 and established Bakery Charms two months later – it turned a year old last week!

Before she spent her days making miniature desserts, Jenn played with and blogged about miniature tech for a living. Soon after earning her master’s degree in English and working as a publications editor, she took the plunge into self-employment and founded Pocketables, a tech news site about portable gadgets. Several years later, she sold Pocketables and two other tech sites she owned to a company in California.

The journey to Bakery Charms was completely unexpected but right now, there is nowhere else she’d rather be.
