We are Pip and Bean and we have been hand-making custom Super Hero capes since 2009. Brian and I (Alyssa) have been married since 2002. We find daily inspiration in our three Kids Charlotte (aka Bean), Penelope (aka Pip) and Harry (born after the company so the unexpected “and”!”)
Like most couples, In the first few years of our marriage we tried to do all kinds of things together. We tried running, cooking, hiking, white water rafting, photography, swimming, board games, all manner of things we could do together. However, most of those things ended with me being bruised (I will never be the athlete in the family). The two of us are so different we couldn’t ever find anything we enjoyed doing together until Pip and Bean.
While Brian was in Grad school getting his PhD in 2009, Pip and Bean was born out of necessity. Our daughters had a birthday party to go to and we had no money to get the kid a gift. I decided I was going to make their little friend a Superhero cape. At the time I didn’t even know how to thread a machine but I could draw and I was desperate. It took me forever to make that first cape and it involved a lot of cursing at the machine and fabric but, it was a hit with the birthday boy and all his friends.
After the party I got requests to make more for our other friend’s kids and before we knew it I had to learn how to get good with that sewing machine. Then Brian encouraged me to open a shop with the promise that he would help with all the “numbers”. It didn’t take us long to realize that the one thing we could do well together was run a small business. The ways we were different were what made us a strong team. He is a number cruncher and I am the creative flare that makes this little shop work.
That was thousands of capes ago. I can make the heck out of a cape now, but don’t ask for curtains unless you want them to look like superman hung his cape over your windows.
