M is for Monster Feature

Oh hey there, mama! I’m Mama Monster Mandy and my company, M is for Monster, helps busy mamas just like you interact and play with your littles while helping build those core learning foundations that make them want to learn even more.

M IS FOR MONSTER 7

I started M is for Monster after I stopped being a preschool teacher (15 years in the making–does that make me sound old?) to become a stay at home mom. One of my philosophies as a teacher was that children need to feel safe and secure in their environment before any learning could take place. I would have parents say to me: “Little Johnny hasn’t learned one single letter while in preschool for two months! What is going on?!” and I would reply: “Well little Johnny needs to learn to trust us and his new surroundings before he can start absorbing what we show him. He needs a strong social foundation before we move on and focus on other things.” At home with you, is where your child feels most comfortable and therefore, will absorb more of what you show them.

Another philosophy I had as a teacher was that learning needs to be fun. Your child needs to giggle and play and love what you are introducing to them. It makes them love learning and crave more of it. It starts them off wanting to learn. Learning through play in the early years is so important.

Armed with that knowledge, I signed my daughter up for preschool with high expectations. She was going to LOVE school! Only, she didn’t. And I couldn’t find out why. It was like all my brain cells went out the window when I had three kids of my own and I no longer remembered anything anymore.

One night while fretting about it, it finally dawned on me! She didn’t trust her teachers and she wasn’t learning through play. Of course she didn’t love school and she wasn’t developing that love of learning!

The next few weeks were a blur as a googled and pinterest-ed it up looking for things for me to do with her. Lesson plans already created and done for me. I had an infant and a two year old at home as well as my three year old. I didn’t have time to run to the store and go shopping for all the supplies to bring these activities to fruition. I barely had time to go grocery shopping. But I did it anyway. It was important for her to learn and it was important for me to spend the time with her.

While walking through the craft store gathering up all the supplies for the activities. I would pick things up and think: “but I don’t need that many of these {insert random craft supply here}.” That’s when it hit me. If I was having this problem of having to hunt and gather for activities and supplies and then spending more money than I needed to on extra materials that were just going to create unwanted clutter, other moms must have this problem too.

And M is for Monster was born. It’s my way of helping other moms feel more connected with their little ones while creating a love of learning in their child.
