Ice Creamy DIY Wall Hanging
I am so excited to be sharing this DIY ice cream cone wall hanging tutorial with all of you Cupcake Mag readers! My name is Ash and I am an independent artist/mom/wannabe DIYer who loves creating. I would describe my art style as bright, whimsical and happy. Find me on Instagram @dashandash and let’s chat!
Supplies:
1 foam core board (a type of poster board with foam in the center) – I opted for the board with the grid to help guide my lines.
3 small rolls of Duck Brand solid colored duct tape – For the ice cream portion, I used all 3 rolls, but you can more than likely do it with 2 large rolls. (Feel free to swap this out with whatever tape you like to work with)
1 large roll of Duck Brand patterned duct tape – For the cone portion.
A ruler
An X-Acto knife
A large cutting Mat
A pair of scissors
You can find all of these things at your local crafts store, I purchased mine from JoAnn Fabrics.
To make the bottom cone section, I started in the bottom middle and used the guidelines to help make the triangular cone. It’s up to you to decide how wide you want the cone to be (or fill it entirely!) For the round ice cream scoop, I used a large circle tray to trace the top portion and just free handed the bottom portion.
Once you have completed your guides, it’s time to cut out your cone! Using the X-Acto knife, cut along the guides you just completed – and always remember to cut away from your body. Because foam core is being used, you may need to recut along the guides multiple times to break through all of the layers.
Now that the coone has been cut out, it’s time to add the tape! The foam core with grids is really helpful at this step, as it’s very helpful in correctly lining up the tape. I would recommend overlapping each row by 1/16th of an inch to avoid white space. It’s also essential to place the tape horizontally, as vertical taping may be more difficult.
For corners or places with odd angles, it is best to cut the tape and fold it down on both edges.
The cone portion is pretty straightforward, just wrap the smaller tape around the cone and you are done. The project took me around 45 minutes to complete including clean up. I prefer using duct tape because I find the hold and structure to be more durable. I have used washi tape on a few other projects, but I feel like it doesn’t supply the greatest hold, specially when kids are involved!
