#CMBookClub: Someday, Someday Maybe

Written with love by | Chelsea |

It’s that time of the month again…book club time! I don’t know about you, but reading is such a nice escape for me. I really enjoy settling down with a good book, especially on a snow day like I had today (one of the perks of being a teacher!) I snuggled up for a bit and knocked out the last bit of this month’s CupcakeMAG book club selection “Someday, Someday Maybe” by Lauren Graham.

I am OBSESSED with Lauren Graham. I was am still addicted to Gilmore Girls and I own all of the seasons, and I have watched Parenthood (although I’m not caught up so don’t tell me how it ends) as well as all of her movies. When I heard that she had written a book I knew I HAD to read it!

In case you are unfamiliar with Someday, Someday Maybe, here is a quick synopsis thanks to good old reliable GoodReads.

Franny Banks is a struggling actress in New York City, with just six months left of the three year deadline she gave herself to succeed. But so far, all she has to show for her efforts is a single line in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters and a degrading waitressing job. She lives in Brooklyn with two roommates-Jane, her best friend from college, and Dan, a sci-fi writer, who is very definitely not boyfriend material-and is struggling with her feelings for a suspiciously charming guy in her acting class, all while trying to find a hair-product cocktail that actually works.

Meanwhile, she dreams of doing “important” work, but only ever seems to get auditions for dishwashing liquid and peanut butter commercials. It’s hard to tell if she’ll run out of time or money first, but either way, failure would mean facing the fact that she has absolutely no skills to make it in the real world. Her father wants her to come home and teach, her agent won’t call her back, and her classmate Penelope, who seems supportive, might just turn out to be her toughest competition yet.

Someday, Someday, Maybe is a funny and charming debut about finding yourself, finding love, and, most difficult of all, finding an acting job.”

Okay so I know it sounds like every other “moved to the big city to find my career and ended up finding so much more” kind of story that we have all read and seen on the big screen before, but that didn’t make me love it any less. I am a sucker for witty writing and you can see Graham’s sense of humor shining throughout her writing. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it and if you have read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
