October has arrived and we can officially celebrate the beginning of fall. First order of business? Well, besides enjoying some delicious pumpkin spiced lattes, it’s crucial to make sure your closet is ready for the new season, the changing temperatures and — gasp — the holidays! (They will be here before you know it.)
As you head to the stores to stock up on clothes and accessories for you or your loved ones, make sure to familiarize yourself with what’s trending in both men and women’s fashion this season. Or, if you’re avoiding the throngs of excited shoppers, use this as a guide as you get a head start drafting your Christmas list!
One of the biggest men’s fashion trends for fall is camo print, which you can find splashed across tees, pants, messenger bags, shoes and even headphones. Let the gentlemen from “Duck Dynasty” inspire you as you choose from traditional military-esque green and olive tones or deconstructed interpretations. Duck whistle not required.
Does black leather ever go out of style? Timeless and luxurious, leather is a staple fabric in anyone’s closet. A great time to purchase leather goods is during the fantastic Black Friday sales, when you will likely be able to score a great piece at an even better price. Pick up a moto or bomber jacket, wallet or pair of loafers to give your wardrobe a sleek infusion of style.
Note: Vegans who are uncomfortable with real leather can still enjoy the trend! There are many faux leather products to choose from at popular nationwide retailers like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.
The easiest way to incorporate plaid into your wardrobe and embrace your inner Paul Bunyan is to rock a plaid button-down shirt. Want to make a bolder statement? Try a plaid jacket. If you’re in colder climates, a plaid trapper hat or a big plaid scarf is stylish and practical. Or, add a plaid tie to your standard work uniform for a little flair!
Herringbone, houndstooth and pinstripes, oh my! One of the biggest fall fashion trends for women is taking a page from Annie Hall’s playbook. Look for classic, tailored pieces, like a great skirt suit or a structured jacket in a sturdy fabric. Bonus points if you can find pieces with extra embellishments like feathers or faux fur around the cuffs. If you think your outfit leans too masculine, add a girly touch like a stiletto heel or a beautiful bag.
As the temperatures drop, a warm fall and winter coat is a necessity in many parts of the country. Why not treat yourself to a luxurious new coat in a candy-colored hue? Pastel colors add a little sweetness to the otherwise practical wardrobe staple. Choose from baby pink, buttercup yellow or even lavender. The great thing about pastel pieces is that they transition perfectly from fall through winter and even into spring. This versatility justifies spending a little more to invest in a great coat. (The only downside is lighter colors may need more frequent trips to the dry cleaners, especially in dirty weather.)
Sid and Nancy are making a comeback as punk dominates the runway and the ready-to-wear collections. Vivienne Westwood may have reintroduced punk to the masses, but now the trend can be found everywhere and at every price point. Scour the racks at Forever 21 or your local boutiques and you will come across plenty of vinyl, tartan, chains, studs and spikes. Accessories are the simplest way to show off the trend — imagine a spiky choker necklace, studded biker boots or a wallet chain draped low across your hips.

Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good statement necklace but recently I’ve really got into the good ol’ simple one chain, one or two charm kinda thing. Maybe it’s because recently I’ve discovered some simple necklaces that I’m head over heels for or maybe I just need some simplicity in my life (hah!).
Personally, I love the anchor trend. The idea of not sinking really gets me, so I’d say 4 out of 5 days you can catch me rockin’ the Large Gold Anchor Necklace from the wonderful Etsy shop, Bip & Bop. And it’s only $25.50!
And one more for the anchor lovers! You can find this beaut in the Etsy shop, jessicaNdesigns for $46!
I also love the whole ‘fearless’ trend though I am not-somedays I would like to think I am. You can snatch up this lovely Fearless Rustic Tag at HorseFeathers for $42!
Then there is this marvelous piece from the Etsy shop, SeaAndCake (recently discovered them & recently infatuated with them). This piece is perfection in my opinion, so chic and simple.
I cannot fathom that it is that time of year again but it is so lets get on with the boot shopping & the emptying of bank accounts! Last fall I lived in my Frye Harness & Ugg Ravenna boots and I know this year I’ll spend a lot of time in them too but if & when I invest in some new boots you can bet your sweet bum that it’ll be a pair or two of these…
I recently shared a quirt, er secret, with my readers on my blog about how I never go anywhere without wearing heels. Whether it’s wedges or heels, if I’m headed out the door chances are I’m rocking one or the other. For the longest times it’s been because I have an “I’m short” complex, I’m 5’2″ and then it was because I wasn’t comfortable in my own skin. I felt if I was taller, I’d look skinnier and I often time sacrificed comfort so I could achieve this. Then in February of this year I began my fitness journey, and the more fit I got and inches I lost (over 10 inches), the more confident I became and the importance of comfort slowly came sliding back into the forefront of my mind. So when I was asked to work with the beautiful lady behind Kiki La Rue to style a couple of my favorite dresses from her shop, I immediately jumped at the chance to work with her and to show how easy it can be to style a day to night look. From flats to heels as we’ll call it.
I know you might be thinking that this dress is silk and therefore to fancy to rock during the day. Umm, heck no! Rock it girl! I mean, if you had this one with a pair of cute sandals that showed off a pop of fun color when your man walks through the door after work, YEOW! He’ll be giving you a Kiki La Rue allowance for sure! Throwing on a cute pair of sandals that allows you to color block and give a little pop of color can make any dress fun to wear all day long. I paired it with some gold bracelets to match the gold in my sandals, color blocked with my aqua strap and I’m on my way to run errands all over town!
Now let’s go from day-to-night. Ladies, it does NOT need to be complicated!!! All I did was tossel (is that a word? You catch my drift) my hair, add some hairspray, throw on a cute aqua necklace for a pop of color blocking goodness and added my favorite pair of nude heels. Every closet, I repeat, every closet should have a cute pair of nude heels. Trust me, you’ll thank me later. Just like that I’m ready for a night out with my man or my girlfriends!
The other dress I got has quickly become one of my utmost favorite dresses ever! I wear it every chance I get. During the day I style it with coral sandals and then again, with just a add of a cute coral necklace and my nude heels and I’m ready for a night out on the town. If I was you, I would buy this dress just because the back is so amazing!
