The Most Important Words You’ll Write

about me

Want to know a secret?  Your About Me Page could be the most important page on your whole site. It’s one of the first clicks a new reader makes when checking out who you are and what you’re about, and it’s also your one shot to either pique their interest enough to come back for more, or scare them away forever. If you are anything like me, it’s tough talking about yourself and wooing people with your words, which makes this possibly the hardest and most daunting task for your website.

There are plenty of “How to Write an About Me Page” articles out there, and you could spend hours doing research, comparing notes and crafting your own brilliant bio.  But I’ve done most of the work for you.  I’ve discovered that most of the really good “About Me” pages have a few elements in common. So I did the research and am happy to share it with you. All that’s left to do is use your creativity and quirky self to really show your readers the authentic you.

Before you get started:
+ Spend 30 minutes looking at your favorite blogs’ about me pages.  Make a list of what attracts you to their page, how it makes you feel, the elements they include, what they talk about and how they talk about it. Keep this information in mind while you are drafting your own page.
+ Think about how you want your readers to feel while they are reading your about me page, use words and phrases to bring that out.
+ Think about who your audience is and how the words that you write can help them.

Some things to include:
+A bold opening statement. Draw them in from the very beginning.
+ The purpose of your blog.  Every blog should have a purpose statement; it not only helps your readers know what to expect from you, but it also helps you bring in the focus of your writing.  Here is an excellent post about writing your blog’s purpose statement. It’s definitely a worthwhile read.
+ Who your audience is.  Tell your reader the type of person you are writing to and why they should stick around.
+Stories that are relevant to your purpose: but don’t share all the details here, link back to old posts and engage your readers to look around to get to know you through the posts you’ve already written.
+Pictures that show the real you.  They could be photos of you doing the thing that you write about, a picture with your family, etc. But make them personable and friendly, not businessy and stuffy.
+How you got to where you are (past achievements, testimonials, recognitions, interesting facts that are unique to you)
+Where people can find you in other places on the internet (social media)
+Where to go next, for example: links to popular posts or series, a link to sign up for your newsletter or an ebook you’ve written.

Important things to remember:
+Font choices (color, size, contrast) matter.
+Your about me page isn’t really about you; it’s about your reader and how they can benefit from reading your words.
+Be different.  Remember what is unique about you, and focus on that.  What makes you stand out from the other bloggers?  It’s not about being better, it’s about being different.
+Don’t share everything here, leave your readers feeling encouraged but curious, and wanting more.  They should leave this page feeling like they know you a little bit better, but not like they’ve learned all they can from you.
+The main driving force behind any successful blog is it’s community of supporters.  Foster a sense of community with the words you write and make it a familiar, welcoming place to come back to.
+The majority of people reading your bio page are first time guests.  You have one shot to hook them in, or watch them leave.
